MY ADVENTURES IN SCREEN PRINTING: ART TO T-SHIRTS + SWEATSHIRTS FOR SALE

by Michel Van Devender October 17, 2022

If you follow me, you already know I love painting directly onto garments, especially denim. You can check out my custom painted denim here. There are however limitations with this method, especially if you’re looking to scale your offerings and inventory. Think one woman with a pair of jeans and a paint brush. Recently, I’ve been exploring other ways of creating wearables with my artwork and designs, including screen printing. I’m also intrigued by the process of screen printing art to paper. Much more to come on that later I’m sure, but for now I want to play around with garment printing.

So when the guys over at Studio Print Shop, a local boutique screen printing company, heard through the grapevine that I am interested in putting some of my artwork to the screens, they invited me to come play around in their studio. I literally jumped at the chance to collaborate with them and learn their process. I also did a little happy dance! They graciously gave me a crash course in Screen Printing 101 and then put me to work with the screen and press. I’m all about a creative process, and what a cool process it is! I thought they might offer me a job; however… sigh… they did NOT.

As you can see from the images, we took my pencil sketched girl and printed her to some t-shirts and sweatshirts. We tried to go lightly with the ink so the drawing retains its pencil sketched look. I absolutely love the way she turned out. They are all a little different. We printed a small run, but will be going back to press here shortly as I already have some orders. I’m also thinking I may try printing white ink on black. Please reach out if you’re interested in getting in on the next round.

I cannot thank the sweet guys at Studio Print Shop enough for indulging me + allowing me to hang with you for a fun, creative morning. You’re the BEST!!! I’m adding screen printing to my skill set too. If you’ll have me, I’d love to come back for Collaboration 2.0! I already have a slew of custom designs in the queue.

It just goes to show when you put something out there, speak it into existence, and the right people hear, things can happen! I call it serendipity!!! Until next time…

P.S.

If you live in the greater Charlotte area + want to see your creations or brand come to life, these are the guys for you! Reach out to Rodney at Studio Print Shop. Give them a follow on Instagram too.

THE BEST OLD FASHIONED PEANUT BUTTER POUND CAKE

by Michel Van Devender October 9, 2022

If you’re a peanut butter lover like I am, this is the cake for you! A family favorite from an old southern cookbook given to me in my early 20s, this peanut butter pound cake gets requested time and time again for birthdays and special occasions at our house. We’ve even worked it into our holiday baking rotation too. It’s my mom’s favorite cake so I usually bake it for her birthday in October.

For this recipe, you use peanut butter for both the cake and the icing. The pound cake has a nice, dense, moist texture with a more crunchy outer edge. And for the icing, it’s basically peanut butter, butter and powdered sugar. I mean, what’s not to love about that? The mixing is pretty straight forward and the baking time typical of a pound cake, and well worth the wait.

The recipe is authored by Elizabeth Smith of Bethpage. I do not know her, but if my memory serves me correctly this cookbook was complied by a community in my hometown of Concord, NC. It may have even been church related. I received the cookbook as a gift in my early days of cooking and baking. As you can see from the image below, this has been a well used and loved resource over the years.

I hope you enjoy this cake as much as we do. Please drop me a note letting me know how your cake turns out. Happy baking!

MICHEL VAN DEVENDER ORIGINAL ART

by Michel Van Devender September 19, 2022

Yes I paint! And many are surprised to learn I’ve painted on and off for years. I hail from a family full of artists, the tortured kind of course. I’m an artist at my core, but have remained rather closeted about my painting, mostly creating for my own home. I honestly never saw it as a path I could or would pursue, mainly because of a rather tough inner critic. But, a winding creative journey and a series of fortunate events unfolding over several years have brought me back to my easel to paint, reconsidering the role art plays in my life. I’m excited to share my work and see where this takes me!

Below you will find a small, curated collection of my most recent black and white abstract art. It’s what inspires me right now. All artwork is for sale. Please email michel.vandevender@gmail.com for pricing and inquiries. Thank you for taking a look!

HEY STRANGER, CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW LONG IT’S BEEN?

by Michel Van Devender September 17, 2022
Well, you know it’s been a minute when your last post was a tomato soup recipe from a cool spring day. And now it’s the middle of September, yikes. If you following me on social media, I have been more consistently posting there. If you do not (please do!), oh hi again! I really have missed being here. I hadn’t exactly planned to take a break from the blog, but in hindsight, I think I really needed a pause after all of the craziness of these past 2+ years. Some people thrive on chaos and crazy, but my friends, I absolutely do not! Give me a big dose of zen with a side of an adaptogen beverage any day. That’s more my vibe, but not always how life plays out. Our family spent most of June in Europe. I hope to gradually go back and share our travels in some future posts. The trip was dreamy, magical and inspiring, exactly what I needed feeling a little depleted creatively and otherwise. The shared experience with two of our three boys was priceless, and I wouldn’t trade the time and memories created together for anything. The limited time we are gifted with their younger selves is fleeting, and I live each passing day with this awareness and with deep appreciation for the time I have. When we returned home, honestly July and August were total blurs. It was a lot of time spent with my kids, a lot of white space and much needed regrouping and reflection. We of course had many days of way too much togetherness. Towards the end of summer, boredom complaints were the norm. The time came when we were ready to return to school, work and a schedule. I am grateful for the privilege and luxury of a pause, boredom and the opportunity to spend so much time with my kids over the summer. I know it isn’t an option for many people. This isn’t lost on me. One of the many benefits of taking a step back is it allowed me some perspective taking and a little space for some shifts. What does that mean exactly, well, it continues to unfold. Here’s what I know for sure so far- traveling and visiting some of the world’s most renowned art galleries and standing in the presence of some of the greatest works of art was awe-inspiring. It reignited my passion for creating my own art and my love of painting. I started feeling an itch, a little nudge to return to the easel. Even though I have painted off and on for over 25 years, I’ve always allowed my inner critic to defeat and derail me. That voice would tell me – you’re not a “good enough” painter (whatever that is), your art is junk, you don’t have a fine arts degree, etc. The voice certainly isn’t logical or grounded in reality. But, I acknowledge the real problem here is I believed the bullshit story I was telling myself. I never truly allowed myself to embrace being the artist I am. So I’m excited to write the easel, canvases and paints are out, like in full force, and in the way of my entire family… lol! Much to everyone’s dismay, I’ve basically taken over our family/TV room for now. I’m working on a studio space, fingers crossed, and am spending much of my days happily painting, playing in a different creative realm. And for those of you who have inquired, YES, I’m still painting jeans and apparel. I’m excited to play and explore this further too. Who knows where this will go. I’ve created a tab on the website where I’ll be posting art and goods. That kind of started with my custom jeans and notecards, but I’ll start including more inventory with detailed descriptions. I’m also working on revamping the website where I’ll be more focused on my art. The ultimate goal will be to have an online shop for easy viewing and purchasing. What does this mean for the blog? Well, I will continue to post content. It may look different, but I’ll still be here. I’m also trying to figure out the frequency, and what will work with my painting. I do love writing too so it will be finding some sort of balance between visual and written expression. They are both my therapy! All of the current content will navigate to the new platform and will always be available for viewing. I also plan to create a newsletter with content and updates. And don’t worry, I won’t be spamming you. Subscribe on the right if you haven’t already. Lastly and most importantly, I cannot thank everyone enough for your kindness, encouragement and support as I’ve started painting again. Honestly, I’ve felt a little raw and exposed. Like I’m standing on a stage naked, but maybe not quite that scary! Although it sounds a little dramatic as I’m writing, I think most creatives experience this at some point and to some extent when they share their art. Being an artist, of any kind, involves bearing your soul, showing up and revealing who you are… being a vulnerable human in a beautiful and cruel world. It is opening yourself up to whatever comes – judgment, criticism, praise, compliments, etc., from the outside world. And, not allowing these opinions to make or break you. Managing your own inner critical dialogue is also crucial. The reality is some will get you, some will not. Others will love what you’re doing while many won’t. You’re not for everyone, but you’ll be for some. That’s normal, expected and completely okay. But, allowing the fear of judgment and your own judgment paralyze you is not the path. And really, does any of the noise matter when you’re doing what you love, living in your purpose, grounded in your essence, fully expressing yourself? I’m still working on that inner critic part. It will be an ongoing process I’m sure. But today, I will paint and continue to evolve creatively, expanding into yet to be discovered parts of myself.

DARK HOME EXTERIORS: 17 BLACK HOUSES YOU’LL LOVE

by Michel Van Devender April 28, 2022

It seems the black house club continues to expand or at least more are being posted and pinned out there. Either way, it makes me happy to see all of the black house love! I continue to see a mix of both traditional and modern black exteriors taking a walk on the dark side, proving black paint isn’t just for modern homes. There are definitely more examples popping up in and around Charlotte. In my opinion, the more the merrier so please keep them coming! Here are some of my favorites from my recent saves on Instagram. Here’s to living inspired! Happy Friday!

SIMPLE ONE POT HOMEMADE TOMATO SOUP

by Michel Van Devender April 18, 2022

Are you like us and feel like there are just certain things that belong together? Like chocolate and peanut butter (Easter candy still on the mind!)? How about rainy, cold April Mondays and tomato soup? As unpredictable spring weather goes here, we’re back in the 40s. When you have a recipe for an easy one pot homemade tomato soup, it just seems like the perfect antidote for this cooler than anticipated April day.

We’re coming off of Easter yesterday with the most spectacular weather, an enormous amount of chocolate consumed and a day spent with family. It was a beautiful day in every way. Today, our kids are still out of school for spring break, and we definitely needed a low-key day to rest and recover. I guess you could say we didn’t mind the rain and cooler temps. Just a good excuse to stay inside.

This tomato soup recipe is easy to prepare with minimal chopping. It’s basically just throwing everything in a pot, a quick simmer and an immersion blender. And if you don’t have one of these, I highly recommend purchasing one. We have a Vitamix, but you absolutely cannot beat the convenience of an immersion blender when you’re cooking soups and sauces. It’s quick and definitely reduces clean up. I’m all about that! This tomato soup is a classic version with a slight twist. For our soup, I added some unsweetened vanilla almond milk for some dairy free creaminess. You could also use dairy if you prefer.

Our lunch was on the table in about thirty minutes. This included preparing the grilled cheeses for my guys too. Most of the time, we don’t have the opportunity to sit together for lunch so this was a nice treat. The smiles and thank yous confirmed this was exactly the comfort meal we all needed today! Hope your week is off to a great start!

HOW TO MAKE EASY NATURAL EASTER EGG DYES

by Michel Van Devender April 12, 2022

Even though our guys are older, they still enjoy dying Easter eggs. We’re an arts and crafts kind of family so it’s an activity right up our alley. We had missed dying Easter eggs the past couple of years so I decided I wanted to make this happen this year. When the stars aligned this week and the grocery store wasn’t sold out of all the white eggs as I’ve experienced in years past, I was excited to return to Easter egg dying. Once I boiled the eggs, and we were set to go, I realized we didn’t have any dye. Ruh-roh! We don’t use dye so we don’t keep it on hand. Instead of journeying back out to the grocery store, I decided we’d make our own natural dyes with what we already have at home.

This is where the experimentation, creativity and fun began. We looked around our kitchen to see what we already had for making some natural dyes. My first thought was what typically stains my hands when I’m cooking. The guys helped me brain storm. The most obvious two ingredients we decided are beets and turmeric. If you’ve worked with these two roots before, you know they don’t typically wash off easily. They actually create pretty stubborn stains. Coffee and tea also came to mind as they leave stains on lighter colored surfaces (unfortunately, our teeth being one of those surfaces!). Looking for a blue and green to add, we decided to experiment with blueberries and a greens powder we usually put in our smoothies. In the interest of time, we decided to stop here, but I’m sure there are so many other options yet to be discovered. You really can get creative with natural dyes for your Easter eggs.

WHAT WE USED

Beet Juice (left over from a jar of picked beets) – PINK

Turmeric Powder (1 T. dissolved in 8 oz. boiling water) – YELLOW

Espresso (6-8 oz. brewed) – TAN

Passion Fruit Tea (1 bag steeped in 8 oz. boiling water) – GREEN (yes, we were also surprised it turned out green!)

*As mentioned above, we tried blueberries and a greens powder we had on hand, but did not have good luck with these two ingredients producing any color on the eggs. Next time, I think I’ll use more of the fruit and powder. Or perhaps I’ll try something different.

HOW TO MAKE

In smaller bowls, add 1 T. white vinegar to each of your liquid dye solutions.

Add a couple of eggs to each bowl and allow to process. With natural dyes, it takes longer for the eggs to take the color. If you want deeper, more vibrant colors, it will take hours (3-4 or for some perhaps even over night). We wanted softer, more muted colors so it took our eggs about an hour or so to process.

Once desired color depth is achieved, remove eggs from dye solution and allow to dry on paper towels.

I consider our little experiment in making our own natural dyes for Easter eggs a big success! We’ll definitely make our own dyes again. And when next year rolls around, we look forward to playing around with some different ingredients to concoct other colors to add to what worked well this go around. I’m definitely in search of a natural blue and orange, maybe a purple too. Let us know if you have any brilliant ideas! Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate!
